Cameron, according to statistics provided by AdMob (<a href="http://metrics.admob.com/" rel="nofollow">July 2009 Metrics Report)</a>, buying directly from the phone IS the most popular way to purchase apps. Not sure how great the study was to come up with that, but your sales stats might help validate that. Would you be willing to email me privately and tell me what kind of sales it took to get to #21? Thanks!

You are correct, I don't think it was a good move to relegate the category navigation to the top iTunes nav bar. It's just not good UI design for people unfamiliar with iTunes.

Strangely though, my app Stick It, currently #21 in top paid utilities, has not seen a decrease in sales. On the contrary, there's been a slight increase. Makes me wonder how the average user browses iTunes to download apps. Perhaps most people download apps directly from their device?

Stick It - iPhone sticky notes for your lockscreen. View your reminders without opening your phone! http://bit.ly/wYWEN

Wow, I finally found the navigation I was looking for. They didnt make it easy. The "App Store" button on top of the page if you hover over it actually has a drop down, which displays the categories. Sheesh.

You have to double-click on the secondary category always in order to view the page you are looking for, even if there is no secondary category, try: "App Store -> Social Networks -> All".
